Cost calculator

Cost calculator: What does your investment account really cost?

Small differences in costs become large over decades. Calculate for yourself, without registration and without saving any data.

%

Gross means before costs are deducted. The default is 7%, as in the retirement calculator. An assumption, not a forecast and not a guarantee.

Three scenarios

Enter the costs for each scenario. The starting values show a low (A), a medium (B) and a high (C) level of costs.

Scenario A

%

Ongoing costs of the fund in percent per year, also called total expense ratio. Typical are about 0.1 to 0.4% for index funds and 1.5 to 2% for actively managed funds.

€

Fixed fee for the account in euros per year. Typical are €0 to about €60.

%

One-off fee in percent on every payment. Often 0% for index funds, up to 5% for active funds.

Scenario B

Scenario C

Costs paid are what you lose compared with an account without any costs. The share of costs in the gain shows which part of your possible gain is lost to costs.

Model calculation for illustration. Not investment advice and not a recommendation for any product. Returns are not guaranteed, and costs and taxes may differ in practice. The calculator does not save any entries.

How the cost calculator works
  • The gross return minus the ongoing costs (TER) gives the annual return after costs. A monthly rate is calculated from it.
  • Every month the money grows at this rate, and then the savings amount is added. The front-end load reduces every payment, including the starting amount.
  • At the end of each year the account fee is deducted. The value never falls below zero.
  • The costs paid are the difference to the same scenario without any costs (no TER, no account fee, no load).
  • The share of costs in the gain is this difference divided by the gain without costs, that is the final amount without costs minus all contributions.
  • Return and costs stay the same over the whole period. Taxes and inflation are not included.
  • Your entries are not saved and not transmitted.
